Ultracold potassium in an optical dipole trap March 2015

With grey molasses cooling on the D_1 line working we have been able to load a crossed-reservoir optical dipole trap. The number of trapped atoms is approximately 5x10⁶ at a temperature of around 60 µK. This is a major milestone for the experiment! With some further optimization still possible, we expect this to be an excellent starting point for evaporative cooling towards quantum degeneracy.
